ABOUT SLABS AND USAGE DETAILS
Marwood has been in the hardwood business for almost 100 years producing lumber and veneer. Originating out of Louisville, KY before moving operations to Southern, IN. Since 2013, Marwood has been producing live edge hardwood slabs and hardwood cookies. Recently, the demand for live edge hardwood slabs has increased among woodworkers because of its diversity in design and application. A woodworker who is looking to build a piece of furniture and bring a bit of the outdoors into their home can do that with a live edge hardwood slab. A restaurant that wants to soften the industrial nature of their bar or dining area can do so with table or bar tops made out of live edge hardwood slabs. The way in which live edge hardwood slabs can bring a combined sense of urban, rustic, classic chic to a piece of furniture or entire room depending on its application is very appealing and now woodworkers are incorporating live edges into their pieces more and more often.
THE PROCESS
All of our hardwood slabs are sawed from whole logs that vary in length and circumference. Our slabs have thicknesses that range between 1 inch and 4 inches. If customers want their slabs sanded, the end product varies in thickness. All hardwood slabs can be bought in sequence, so that the grain and crotch match for design consistency. Each slab at Marwood will go through the process of sawing, kiln-dried, and can sand if requested at our facility. We can sand the slabs in our 36″ wide belt finish sander using 80 grit sandpaper. To see what types of hardwood slabs and cookies are coming out of our kiln soon, visit our Coming Out of The Kiln page.
