Power of Decor

What sticks out to you in this photo? While most would say the adorable pooch, it’s really the ensemble of décor that sticks out in the household.  The floating Walnut treads add an openness to the entryway that was not there before.  that add color and character, as well as opening the area to more of a visual and lighting.  The sapwood on the outside of each piece compliments the oak floors well, while also adding a nice contrast from the dark heartwood color.  The natural lighting in this home was another reason the design called for wood – you can truly see the natural beauty of the wood and really brings it to life.  Lastly, our client wanted the wood to match the color of the mantel and coffee table.  Our design team was able to use Walnut to tie the whole design together.  Mix these together with a nice Christmas wreath, and you have an inviting home to welcome everyone to for the holiday.

Epoxy Coffee Table

If you are not yet familiar with epoxy in woodworking, maybe you are a little behind the times! Epoxy resin has recently become very popular for filling voids, cracks, knots or any other imperfections. Epoxy resin can also be used to spruce up a design by filling in lettering for signage and other artistic pieces.

What can be most fun when using the epoxy resin for design is the ability to create different colors and patterns. For this particular project, our client wanted to match the epoxy resin to the same color as an existing gold base. The client was looking for a round-cut coffee table that was a natural dark color and had unusual characteristics. We were able to use this California Walnut piece and fill all the voids and tiny holes with the matching gold epoxy resin. The wood took in the resin very well and we used a flood coat of epoxy to make sure that the color in some of the smaller holes was going to pop out as well. The difficult part for our team to complete the table was making sure all the burls and unique characteristics stayed in tact while removing the bark and other dirt follicles. The team was able to accomplish this using a small dremel tool, as well as a charcoal blaster.

Overall, the design was very impressive and we love the way that the piece turned out.

Live Edge Maple Shelf

Small Items Carry a Big Load!

So, you don’t want to spend the extra money on a large custom designed piece, were not here to judge! Conversely, our team is here to help along the way! No project is too big or small for our team, and one of our more popular items to display is our live edge shelves.  These shelves can be hung with floating hardware to give the illusion that the shelves are attached to the wall, or they can be installed using brackets that further accentuate the piece and add to the decor of the area.  An interesting feature of these Live Edge Shelves are the worm holes from the Ambrosia Maple.  The Ambrosia Beetle dives goes beneath the woods surface and creates unique and natural streaks that add character to the wood.  These streaks are displayed on the live edge part of the wood, so you are able to view the natural beauty of the wood.  These shelves can be added to any room, and perhaps the best part about them, besides their natural elegance, is the shelves do not take up any space! They are simply an extension of the wall and can be used to display some of your most prized possessions.

Popular Live Edge Design

Everyone should have some sort of statement piece in their household, one of our favorite staples in any home is the dining room table.  Family and friends come together during the holidays and there’s no better way to start a conversation than having a piece of furniture that truly stands out.  Our most recent project does exactly that, displaying the unique design and character of the tree, the client wanted something “BIG” and natural looking.  The Walnut dining table was constructed using a single Walnut Crotch piece that extended over 50” wide, 9’ long, and over 2.5” thick.  The base was also custom designed using Red Oak beams to compliment the bulkiness of the tabletop.  Live edge slabs have become increasingly popular, maybe the biggest appeal to them is the natural design and the customer knowing that nobody else will have a table like it.  Residential projects like this always seem to have the happiest endings.  Not that our team appreciates these residential builds over commercial, but when designing a piece that is made specifically for the customers home and not their building, it brings a little more emotion and attraction to the project.  We strive to meet each detail for the customer and its always a joy to see the result and reaction of the customer.

Local Doctor’s Office

The same wood that is used to create The Louisville Slugger brand was selected to use for our most recent project.  The reception desk for a local doctor’s office needed to be constructed using a 13’ section, and a mitered 12’ long section of Ash.  The customer wanted a lighter wood and finish to compliment the floors, and the grain of this live edge ash tree had the right color and unique movement within the grain pattern.  The customer also decided not to use a live edge, so the edges were sanded down using a round over router bit to create a Bullnose edge.  The edge is flush and if someone were to knock or bump into the surface there would be no repercussions.  This project was a blast to complete, while working directly with our customer to complete the look they envisioned from the start.  Each custom piece is designed to be unique, and the River City team looks forward to helping you complete your next project, big or small!

Custom NYC Salon

River City Wood Design recently completed work for a high-profile Salon in New York City.  The cabinets and reception desk were all crafted using Reclaimed White Oak from the 1792 Barton distillery that collapsed in July of 2018.  The wood was cleaned up but still has a little bit of that rustic reclaimed feel.  The nail holes were also preserved instead of filled, further creating the rustic design that the customer wanted to maintain.

Custom Salon using Reclaimed White Oak and Maple Live Edge

The 26-foot counter-top was designed to flow evenly along the wall using Live Edge Ambrosia Maple slabs, designed using wood from the same log to create a consistent flow.  The customer wanted a light-colored wood species that was similar in color to the White Oak and by using Maple the craftsmen were able to create that look.
